About us

silla was born out of a passion for beautiful objects: special pieces with aesthetic and historical significance. In 2009, after years of collecting, Andrew Silla and his wife Grace began to work privately with clients from their residence in Southern Maryland. Quickly outgrowing the space, the business was moved from Maryland to Pennsylvania in 2012 and after several warehouse location changes it was firmly settled in the present brick-and-mortar location in downtown Shippensburg.

The 9000 square foot brick-and-mortar gallery is home to a large collection of works of art and estate jewelry. We specialize in sculpture circa 1860 through 1930 with a particular emphasis on the Animaliers and as such the gallery always has a very large collection of exceptional European and American sculpture available on display.

JOHN EDMOND CLUYSENAAR (AUSTRIA, 1899-1986) FIGURE OF A BATHING LADY
Signed in casting along edge "192 John Cluysenaar", patinated bronze over marble base
Item # 810VGG21

A fine modernist bronze of a bathing lady, the figure is kneeling over an integral naturalistic base mottled with rock and earth as she dries her hands on a towel furled around her legs and spilling over the ground. It is finished in an attractive original mocha patina in exceptional condition and is signed along the edge of the base “192 John Cluysenaar”. It is raised over a variated black marble base.

John Edmond Cluysenaar was born in Ukkel, Belgium on September 27 of 1899.  He studied at the Brussels Academy and was a member of the Royal Society of Fine Arts in Belgium.  In 1924 he was awarded both the Prix de Rome and the Prix Godecharle.  Primarily a sculptor in his early career, he was well known for producing numerous busts and his commission for the statue of the Prince de Ligne in the Jardin d’Egmont in Brussels.  In 1939, he turned his focus from sculpting to painting with the body of his work focused on abstract subjects.
