A fine modernist bronze of a bathing lady, the figure is kneeling over an integral naturalistic base mottled with rock and earth as she dries her hands on a towel furled around her legs and spilling over the ground. It is finished in an attractive original mocha patina in exceptional condition and is signed along the edge of the base “192 John Cluysenaar”. It is raised over a variated black marble base.
John Edmond Cluysenaar was born in Ukkel, Belgium on September 27 of 1899. He studied at the Brussels Academy and was a member of the Royal Society of Fine Arts in Belgium. In 1924 he was awarded both the Prix de Rome and the Prix Godecharle. Primarily a sculptor in his early career, he was well known for producing numerous busts and his commission for the statue of the Prince de Ligne in the Jardin d’Egmont in Brussels. In 1939, he turned his focus from sculpting to painting with the body of his work focused on abstract subjects. (source: Benezit).
