MODERN "BULLET TRAIN" WRITING TABLE BY ROBERT SORRELL
A fine artisan piece circa 1980s, unmarked (sold with original bill of sale)
Item # 604PPK25A
Interesting not only for its diverse use of native woods and the transparency of the angles, but also for the inventive eye for joinery. Utilizing the simple mechanical joints of the past coupled with a very modern and geometrical form, this is a piece that lives and moves with you, always in flux and always changing. Designed by Robert Sorrell in the 1980s, he includes an etched steel hammer to continually tighten and adjust the wedges that lock the table together. You will literally feel the desk change with the seasons as winter woods shrink and the wedges need to be tapped in. The exposed dovetails of the drawer and sculpted driftwood pull emphasize this unique jigsaw approach to mixing woods, angles and joinery.
An ingenuitive and thoughtful work, this remains a most striking mixture of function and form, both as a very enjoyable writing desk and as a riveting design element.
