Pair of Biedermeier Ebony and Birch Beds, Swedish c. 1840
PAIR OF BIEDERMEIER PARCEL EBONIZED BIRCH BEDS
Probably Swedish c. 1840
Item # 612GNP14Q
This bold pair of beds offer a distinctly Biedermeier perspective on Greek classicism. Powerful pairs of columns flank the footboard on either bed, each resting over massive square footings and raising a solid beautifully shaped plank of birch over their ebonized capitals. Throughout the foot and headboards as well as both rails, an interesting pattern of crossbanding is achieved by setting the gorgeous birch boards against each other in such a way that these incredible grain patterns are achieved. The lightwood is so effective as it allows the eye to hone in on the natural interest in the boards and is defined by the stark contrast of ebonized elements. Flanking the tall headboard are thick turned columns that are in harmony with the footboard but distinct in their faceted octagonal feet and simple hemisphere caps. The rails lock into the foot and headboards with toothed iron hardware that joins into a receiving plate on either end. Naturally a custom mattress will have to be made for them, or an upholstered seat if they are to be used as a daybed instead of in the bedroom.
Rare and in pure original condition, this exceptional pair of beds bring an unusual visual interest to any room with their brilliant and bold forms.
Measurements: 54 1/2" H (headboard) x 83" W x 42" D
Some shrinkage gaps to headboard and footboard panels. Minor wear to early ebony and light scuffs to surfaces. Some patches at rail ends, probably from old hardware breakout. A custom mattress/boxspring will be required for the pair. Very sturdy and strong throughout..
