FRENCH EMPIRE STYLE PAIR OF MAHOGANY BERGERES
Circa early 20th century
Item # 611BEQ03P
The deep ruby hues of the brilliant high polish mahogany primary woods on both chairs is just gorgeous. Designed clearly in the Empire taste, the pair is probably from the turn of the century while being crafted with earlier techniques - the seat rail is locked together with double-pegged tenon mortised joints on the back, single pegged tenons at the front legs, lending a permanent strength to the frame. The dimensions are somewhat slight in a most attractive way, the open arms following the trapezoidal form of the seat to tighten nicely at the back and hug the sitter. They curl down from carved foliage at the stiles into a bold handhold with a stylized scrolling where the arms join the leg. An anthemion relief carving just over the exposed frame edge is highlighted by the brass tacking that wraps around the arm rails and travels the circumference of the seat rail. They are webbed and stuffed, the underside left exposed to show the orderly construction of the frame - the use of thick framing and pegged tenon mortising allows the chairs to forgo the use of corner blocking.
A most attractive pair for the classical interior, remaining in outstanding original condition and incredibly strong throughout, this is a pair that well cared for will remain enjoyable for a lifetime.
