PAIR OF ITALIAN NEOCLASSICAL CARVED GILTWOOD LOOKING GLASSES
With parcel-ebonized relief busts of classical figures; early 19th century
Item # 907YIM17
A powerful pair of looking glasses remaining in excellent original condition, they are finished in a burnished gilding that has tarnished and crackled beautifully over the years. The old pair of glass panes remain smoky and oxidized with the attractive effects of time on the silver evident. A pair of opposing relief carved classical busts face one another in the crest under draped laurel leaves over an ebonized ground. They are a rather rare find in this overall condition and presentation.
Measurements: 29 1/2" H x 14 1/4" W x 1" D
Old gilding with wear throughout showing red bole beneath; old silvered glass with loss of silvering and oxidization throughout; glass backing board replaced and with 20th century nails; minor chips and losses to the carved frame; areas of regilding and later touchups; small original iron hoop in bottom portion of each frame would once have held an iron girandole, usually with two candle sticks - these are since missing.
