PAIR OF FRENCH LOUIS XVI CARVED GILTWOOD FAUTEUILS
Parisian quality, circa 1900
Item # 003CQW13P
An exquisite pair of giltwood fauteuils designed in the iconic Louis XVI taste, this fine pair of chairs exhibit crisp carved motifs and an attractively worn tapestry upholstery. The rich gilded surfaces remain in overall good condition with a warm visibility of the underlying bole gesso glowing through the naturally rubbed surfaces. The frame of the ovular chair back is richly ornamented with reeded molding and equally spaced displays of flowers intermingled with diverse foliage. The acanthus motif remains prominent throughout, this boldly carved into the stiles raising the ovular back, the base of the arm supports, the capitals of each leg and the center of the apron. The chairs are raised over stop-fluted legs over toupie feet. The seats are webbed and sprung with horsehair stuffing under an early tapestry upholstery.
