SET OF EIGHT QUEEN ANNE BLACK LACQUER AND CHINOISERIE DECORATED DINING CHAIRS
Circa early 20th century
Item # 901GFZ23L
A simply superb set of eight vintage dining chairs from the first half of the 20th century, they are intricately carved and decorated in the Queen Anne / George II taste of the English originals. With delicate lines and a sinuous profile, each chair is incredibly tasteful both in proportions and in surface decoration. The black lacquer surface has delightfully worn and retains a nice growing patina throughout, this contrasted nicely against the gilt painted chinoiserie scenes. Each scene is unique and takes a different glimpse at provincial life in the Far East. The set is composed of six side chairs and two arm chairs, these with crisply carved hand-holds with anthemion motifs followed by graduated lobed shells. Each rests over cabriole legs with gilt-highlighted bas-relief knee carvings capturing a lobed shell and scrolled returns, these terminating over padded feet.
These are a very handsome set, finely crafted and most striking.
