SET OF SIX SWEDISH GUSTAVIAN STYLE FAN-CARVED DINING CHAIRS
In distressed white and charcoal paint, circa 20th century
Item # 804BBW07P
This delightful set of six chairs crafted in the Swedish Gustavian taste are finished in a gorgeous and nicely worn mottled white paint. The back of each chair is clearly influenced by the Empire forms of the early 19th century, the dramatic curving crest with oversized scalloping along the bottom and a crenulated central carving in an old charcoal paint. Each seat has been reupholstered in the last decade or so in a nice high quality green striped covering over the muslin underlayer. The legs are such a gentle klismo with their soft tapering, just hinting at the Greek Classicism that inspired the era; they are locked together with through-tenoned stretchers, the undersides of the chairs left open to show the clean joinery. They are a positively gorgeous set.
