T.H. ROBSJOHN-GIBBINGS FOR JOHN WIDDICOMB DINING TABLE AND SIX CHAIRS
Walnut in sherry finish, models 4301 (table) and 4204 (chairs); labeled and dated circa 1957
Item # 802PPZ07S
Designed by T.H. Robsjohn-Gibbings (United Kingdom, 1905-76) for production by John Widdicomb in the 1950s, this particular suite was manufactured in February of 1957 per the markings to the underside and it retains the original Widdicomb label. It is the perfect size to fit the six chairs included with the suite and while the table does open to accept additional leaves, these have long since been lost and are no longer available for the set. One of the images attached shows the chair set in an original ad, though the table featured is the double pedestal rather than the four klismo legged table. There is a distinct Athenian influence in the form with an original take on the Klismo leg that is so striking. Each leg splays deeply with an incredible amount of drama. All pieces are of very fine craftsmanship throughout. It is a rather rare suite designed by one of the most important tastemakers of his time.
Measurements: 67 7/8” W x 40” D x 29” H [table, closed]; 22 1/4” W x 24” D x 33 1/2” H [arm chairs]; 21 3/4” W x 24” D x 33 1/2” H [side chairs]; all chairs 17” H to seat
Chairs and table in as-is condition; all should be restored to be properly enjoyed. Most restored sets will retail in the low five-figures, making this a well-priced candidate for restoration. Original naugahyde upholstery with some marks (mostly where the chairs would touch the edge of the table), remaining nicely stuffed and quite comfortable. Chair joints a bit loose, particularly the arm chairs. Table with finish wear - it has been polished and has a beautiful glow; specks of finish loss, old finish loss/recoloring to one corner, one portion of edge with colored repair; color losses to extreme edges of table; table opens to receive two leaves, these no longer available. Legs of table with discolorations, particularly around the feet.
