About us

silla was born out of a passion for beautiful objects: special pieces with aesthetic and historical significance. In 2009, after years of collecting, Andrew Silla and his wife Grace began to work privately with clients from their residence in Southern Maryland. Quickly outgrowing the space, the business was moved from Maryland to Pennsylvania in 2012 and after several warehouse location changes it was firmly settled in the present brick-and-mortar location in downtown Shippensburg.

The 9000 square foot brick-and-mortar gallery is home to a large collection of works of art and estate jewelry. We specialize in sculpture circa 1860 through 1930 with a particular emphasis on the Animaliers and as such the gallery always has a very large collection of exceptional European and American sculpture available on display.

"THE OLD RED MILL" BY ELISA AGNETUS-EMILIUS NYHOFF (FRENCH, 1826-1903)
In oil on canvas, signed lower left "A. A.E. Nyhoff"
Item # 904VFX03L

An exquisitely detailed genre scene of a young peasant boy and girl playing with the ducks by the pool of water trickling idly by from the water wheel of the aged mill; despite its seeming state of disrepair, it is actively being used as smoke drifts from the chimney stack.  Inordinately rich and full of complexity, the foliage of the glade is vivid and of notable breadth with small trails worn into the soil where mosses meander and fallen trunks are surrounded by ferns. In the distance a shepherd leads his flock through a wooded pass.

While her works rarely show up on the open market, Sotheby's carried another scene titled "A Mill by the Canal", which sold for $ 12,000 USD in 2005.

Measurements: 32 1/4" H x 44 1/4" W x 2 3/4" D [frame]; 25 3/8" H x 37 1/2" W [canvas]
