Vintage Pair of Distressed Gray Painted Fauteuils in Louis XVI taste
PAIR OF FRENCH LOUIS XVI STYLE DISTRESSED GRAY FAUTEUIL ARM CHAIRS
Circa 1st half of the 20th century, very high quality craftsmanship
Item # 705JBP14O
A most attractive pair of chairs in the Louis XVI taste, both have their own sense of originality of interpretation of this classical form, particularly in the legs which have a distinct swell into the seat frame. The rosette motifs in the corners are stylized with softness and simplicity, a departure from the generally sharp applied rosettes of more traditional forms. The angular reeding that flows through the legs and up the arm supports lends a lightness of form and emphasizes the thin profile of the legs. Most attractive is the gorgeous worn surface, a blend of warm grays over a red-oxide that glows through in areas that have worn away. The recesses of the reeding and molding are highlighted with this same red-oxide, matching the velour covering beautifully. A finely hand carved display of floral buds finishes the crest of each chair.
These are a heavy and very finely crafted pair of chairs - they were built to last the test of time, having held up beautifully and remaining young in joints.
Measurements: 24 1/4” W x 21” D x 36 1/2” H, 16” H to seat
Old mellow covering with some discoloration and fading. Heavily distressed surface throughout. All joints very sturdy and strong, both chairs very comfortable and supportive.
