AMERICAN DIMINUTIVE RED PAINTED BLANKET CHEST
Mid Atlantic States, circa 1820-40
Item # 801RYK31P
An absolute delight, this jewel has a wonderful early and complex red-wash surface over a dense tulip poplar body. The top is affixed on iron cotter pin hinges, lifting to reveal a tidy interior with a till on the left side. Exposed dovetails along the corners lock the four sides while the bottom is affixed with wooden pins driven around the sides. The turned bottle-neck bun feet are crisply turned and lend a nice balance to the angular and relatively austere facade. For collectors of furnishings and decorative arts from the Mid-Atlantic states, this is such an interesting find.
Measurements: 28 1/2” W x 14” D x 13 1/2” H
Surface refreshed in some areas with a matched red pigment, notable on the feet and probably evident elsewhere. Battens removed and reattached at one point. Some losses, particularly to the base molding and some wear to the feet. Retaining what appears to be the original cotter pin hinges and clasp.
