About us

silla was born out of a passion for beautiful objects: special pieces with aesthetic and historical significance. In 2009, after years of collecting, Andrew Silla and his wife Grace began to work privately with clients from their residence in Southern Maryland. Quickly outgrowing the space, the business was moved from Maryland to Pennsylvania in 2012 and after several warehouse location changes it was firmly settled in the present brick-and-mortar location in downtown Shippensburg.

The 9000 square foot brick-and-mortar gallery is home to a large collection of works of art and estate jewelry. We specialize in sculpture circa 1860 through 1930 with a particular emphasis on the Animaliers and as such the gallery always has a very large collection of exceptional European and American sculpture available on display.

FINE SCULPTED MARBLE BUST OF A ROMAN GENTLEMAN
Unsigned, Italy, c. 19th Century
Item #  409BKY13Z

Of positively exceptional form and clarity, this nearly life-size bust of a Roman Gentleman is sculpted with great skill.  The surface is warm with years of dirt and handling, something we've left untouched as it adds charm to the piece; with only the most minor of surface blemishes, this piece has clearly been cherished carefully and not moved with great frequency.  Crafted in two parts, the socle is one with it's faceted crest, this joining below the chest with a simple seam.  It is a very fine sculpture for anyone passionate about marble works of the 19th Century.

Measurements:  23" H (total height) x 13" W x 9 3/4" D

Condition Report:
Socle appears to be original.  Surface of all marble dirty.  Light abrasions and chips here and there, these more closely detailed in the slideshow of images.  Overall exceptional condition.
