About us

silla was born out of a passion for beautiful objects: special pieces with aesthetic and historical significance. In 2009, after years of collecting, Andrew Silla and his wife Grace began to work privately with clients from their residence in Southern Maryland. Quickly outgrowing the space, the business was moved from Maryland to Pennsylvania in 2012 and after several warehouse location changes it was firmly settled in the present brick-and-mortar location in downtown Shippensburg.

The 9000 square foot brick-and-mortar gallery is home to a large collection of works of art and estate jewelry. We specialize in sculpture circa 1860 through 1930 with a particular emphasis on the Animaliers and as such the gallery always has a very large collection of exceptional European and American sculpture available on display.

Hendrik Hollander (Dutch, 1823-1884) Fine Antique Oil Painting on Canvas
A Domestic Interior Genre Scene, signed lower right "H Hollander"
Item # 130211SIP30

Exceptional in every way, this gorgeous scene captures a family relaxing around the dining table in the evening hours. The level of detail captured in this work is quite fine and highly striking, the colors deep and high in contrast throughout. The lighting of this antique Dutch painting is highly technical and quite effective - an unknown light source casts evenly from somewhere behind us and off to the right, each shadow accurately resulted from this singular source as the dimmed orange of a setting sun is visible through the arched door of the next room. The realism is noteworthy, the scale of each object captured with precision and giving us insight into a period interior of a Netherlands home in the mid-to-late 19th Century. The scene itself is the epitome of nostalgia, the mother nursing her newborn while her daughter shows careful affection to her sister, her husband pondering some literature he is enjoying while the help wraps up the days chores. It is a stunning conversational antique painting that brings an incredible warmth to whatever room it becomes a part of, a highly enjoyable glimpse into a moment of time in an early era.

This investment grade antique work of art is a piece you will cherish for a lifetime, professionally conserved and protected for another century of enjoyment.
