JULIEN MONIER (FRENCH, WK. 1890-1915) BRONZE SCULPTURE OF “CREDO”
Signed in base, dated 1904 and numbered 234
Item # 609PAM25A
A most fine work also catalogued in Berman’s Bronzes: Sculptors and Founders, Vol IV (1977, p. 679, f. 2497), the sculpture depicts a young medieval crusader in his chain mail, the cross of his uniform corresponding to the cross of his sword as he gazes upward upon it. With his hand over his breast, his face is set in a moment of reverence as he dedicates his sword to heaven. This sculpture was executed by Monier in several mediums, including gilt bronze, chryselephantine and brown patinated bronze; the smaller edition is more common, measuring between 14 and 15 1/2” in height. The present example is the most substantial version of this sculpture we are aware of, having a full length of 22 3/4” and having fully developed detailing of every aspect of the figure. Beyond a perfectly cast surface, the figure is expertly chiseled with crisp detailing of his sharp face features, fingernails, the chaotic linking of his chain mail and a wonderful realism in the shoe treatments. He stands over a naturalistic base with a raised title of “Credo” along the front edge, the right edge being signed in script “Julien Monier 1904” and the bevelled rear corner numbered 234.
A very moving and striking work, it remains an infrequently found and most fine selection for the collector of fine French bronze sculpture.
