About us

silla was born out of a passion for beautiful objects: special pieces with aesthetic and historical significance. In 2009, after years of collecting, Andrew Silla and his wife Grace began to work privately with clients from their residence in Southern Maryland. Quickly outgrowing the space, the business was moved from Maryland to Pennsylvania in 2012 and after several warehouse location changes it was firmly settled in the present brick-and-mortar location in downtown Shippensburg.

The 9000 square foot brick-and-mortar gallery is home to a large collection of works of art and estate jewelry. We specialize in sculpture circa 1860 through 1930 with a particular emphasis on the Animaliers and as such the gallery always has a very large collection of exceptional European and American sculpture available on display.

EMIL VAN MARCKE (FRENCH, 1827-1890)
Cows at Pasture
Oil on panel | Signed lower right "Em. van MarKe"
Item # 1401NXT14PP

This exceptional work by Emil Van Marcke is executed in oils on panel, capturing a group of cows lounging at pasture on a lazy summer day. The detail is just wonderful, capturing the nonchalant atmosphere and warm mood while executing the animal group with scientific precision. His perfect sense of proportion and technical understanding of these magnificent creatures sets his works apart from his counterparts.

Measurements: [framed] 25 3/4" wide x 22 5/8" high; [panel] 16 1/4" wide x 13 1/8" high

Condition Report:

  • Very light edge wear, surface not fully vibrant due to some light grime - the surface should be cleaned to be fully enjoyed.
  • [UNDER UV] difficult to examine under UV due to the conflicting pigments; scattered craquelure touch-ups in the sky, mid-right quadrant (the brown resting cow) with a bland brownish-cast is visible under UV (also somewhat bland to the eye), possibly overpainted, though we believe it is probably the pigment fluorescing. Possible inpainting in the trees and grass, but again very difficult to separate from the dark painted areas. A milky-green cast in the lower 1/3 of the painting somewhat obscures examination of these areas, probably from a later varnish. We have high-resolution images of these areas under UV available upon request if this is important to you and two high resolution images available under "ADDITIONAL RESOURCES" for your review.
  • [FRAME] Early and possibly original; gesso loss on the lower edge of the frame in two areas, gesso loss to lower left corner, lower left corner acanthus foliage tip loose and almost separated; frame unpainted.
