About us

silla was born out of a passion for beautiful objects: special pieces with aesthetic and historical significance. In 2009, after years of collecting, Andrew Silla and his wife Grace began to work privately with clients from their residence in Southern Maryland. Quickly outgrowing the space, the business was moved from Maryland to Pennsylvania in 2012 and after several warehouse location changes it was firmly settled in the present brick-and-mortar location in downtown Shippensburg.

The 9000 square foot brick-and-mortar gallery is home to a large collection of works of art and estate jewelry. We specialize in sculpture circa 1860 through 1930 with a particular emphasis on the Animaliers and as such the gallery always has a very large collection of exceptional European and American sculpture available on display.

GEORGE III MAHOGANY CHEST ON CHEST
England, circa 1800
Item # 905KUB29A

Crafted of a dark and dense mahogany, both in the solid and veneer forms, this excellent George III period chest on chest has a lovely overall surface patination built up from years of waxing and polishing over the shellac finish. It is a powerful architectural statement with the toothed dentil molding around the top beneath the bold cove crest molding. Each of the drawers is surrounded by cockbead molding around the crisp and precise hand dovetailed oak secondary woods, this surrounding a smooth and pleasing mahogany grain profile that runs horizontally in the fronts and drawer blades throughout the surface. Flanking the drawers are fluted-and-bevelled corners that terminate in a lambs-tongue. The case is situated over bracket feet with curled returns.

It is a very fine piece preserved in excellent original condition throughout.

Measurements: 75" H x 43" W x 21 1/2" D

Condition Report:
Original feet. Replaced brasses with some shadowing around present pulls. Includes one key. Veneer patches in numerous places throughout, mostly to drawer blades over locks; spliced curled return on right foot (facing). Old shrink cracks to the sides. Strip of wood added to edge of backboard verso. Chip loss on right side (facing) at back edge of crest molding and small loss to waist molding at front corner of same side.
