About us

silla was born out of a passion for beautiful objects: special pieces with aesthetic and historical significance. In 2009, after years of collecting, Andrew Silla and his wife Grace began to work privately with clients from their residence in Southern Maryland. Quickly outgrowing the space, the business was moved from Maryland to Pennsylvania in 2012 and after several warehouse location changes it was firmly settled in the present brick-and-mortar location in downtown Shippensburg.

The 9000 square foot brick-and-mortar gallery is home to a large collection of works of art and estate jewelry. We specialize in sculpture circa 1860 through 1930 with a particular emphasis on the Animaliers and as such the gallery always has a very large collection of exceptional European and American sculpture available on display.

A NEOCLASSICAL CARVED GILTWOOD CONSOLE WITH RED MARBLE TOP
Continental, circa early 20th century
Item # 911EMT24Z

Perhaps the most beautiful element in this console is the gorgeous piece of red marble in the top. The thick piece of stone is complex with cream vein lines moving through the mixes of various red stone that have become part of the marble over time. This is cut to conform with the profile of the table, demilune with recessed curved corners.

The console is carved and molded and finished in a brilliant original gilding, some of it having worn away to reveal the red bole and white gesso layers beneath. Certainly of a more Northern European influence, the bold profile is distinctly Neoclassical with angular form and motif throughout.

The four legs are firmly locked in place with a wavy stretcher, allowing the table to stand on its own even for a moment when not situated against the wall.

It is a positively gorgeous strikepoint piece.

Measurements: 31 7/8" H x 17 3/4" D x 47" W

Condition Report:
Chips and loss to giltwood throughout. Minor joint separations. Excellent overall condition, a fine presentation.
