About us

silla was born out of a passion for beautiful objects: special pieces with aesthetic and historical significance. In 2009, after years of collecting, Andrew Silla and his wife Grace began to work privately with clients from their residence in Southern Maryland. Quickly outgrowing the space, the business was moved from Maryland to Pennsylvania in 2012 and after several warehouse location changes it was firmly settled in the present brick-and-mortar location in downtown Shippensburg.

The 9000 square foot brick-and-mortar gallery is home to a large collection of works of art and estate jewelry. We specialize in sculpture circa 1860 through 1930 with a particular emphasis on the Animaliers and as such the gallery always has a very large collection of exceptional European and American sculpture available on display.

FINE PAIR OF GILT BRONZE AND MARBLE LAMPS BY E.F. CALDWELL
New York, circa 1900; foot stamped apparently A3933, unsigned
Item # 712KZW08P

An exceptional and pristine pair of gilt bronze two-light lamps executed by the firm of Edward F. Caldwell Co. of New York during the first years of the 20th century, they exhibit a sophisticated columnar form directly influenced by the designs of the Louis XVI period.  The body is beautifully fluted with anthemion stop-flutes over a laurel-wreath ring base of inordinately crisp chiseling and leaf formation.  A pair of acanthus draped stems flank the column and raise the drip-catch and candle wells that house a faux candlestick.  Painstaking efforts were taken to hide all wiring within the thin stems before coming through the body and exiting beneath the black marble base.  The lighting is not marked by Caldwell, but we have in our files pictures of a clock of identical ornamentation signed by Caldwell; the feet of the clock are particularly unique and a perfect match for the intricate and variated feet the pair of candlesticks rest over.  Images of the signed clock can be provided upon request.

Measurements:  approximately 13" W x 5" D x 15 1/8" H

Condition Report:
Both lamps must be rewired prior to use.  Minor discoloration to gilding and some trace of verdigris.
