About us

silla was born out of a passion for beautiful objects: special pieces with aesthetic and historical significance. In 2009, after years of collecting, Andrew Silla and his wife Grace began to work privately with clients from their residence in Southern Maryland. Quickly outgrowing the space, the business was moved from Maryland to Pennsylvania in 2012 and after several warehouse location changes it was firmly settled in the present brick-and-mortar location in downtown Shippensburg.

The 9000 square foot brick-and-mortar gallery is home to a large collection of works of art and estate jewelry. We specialize in sculpture circa 1860 through 1930 with a particular emphasis on the Animaliers and as such the gallery always has a very large collection of exceptional European and American sculpture available on display.

PAIR OF GRAND TOUR POLISHED MARMO AFRICANO MARBLE SPHERES
Circa early 19th century over shaped rock plinth
Item # C104033

A gorgeous pair of 19th century decorative marmo africano marble spheres on shaped rock bases, they were likely intended both to present sculpturally and for use as paperweights. The old stone is beautifully worn with a naturally developed patina throughout from handling and wear over the years; they rest over bases that have a brilliant glow from handling, polishing and waxing over the years. A lovely and rather infrequently found pair made of the same stone cherished by the Romans and used to decorate the threshold of the Pantheon.

Provenance:

  • Acquired at Walpole Antiques, London for a private collection in Virginia

Measurements: 5" H x 4 1/2" W [reddish sphere and stand]; 5 1/2" H x 3 3/4" W [gray sphere and stand]

Condition Report:
Minor wear to overall polish; light chipping and scratching to patinated stone bases.
