"THE LARGE CAT" ENGRAVING ON LINEN BY FRANCOIS VIVARES AFTER CORNELIS VISSCHER
Published in London, circa 1749; engraving after Visscher sans the background
Item # C104042
Visscher's painting of "The Large Cat", also known as "Sleeping Cat", originally depicts a tabby cat crouched in the dirt sleeping with its body filling nearly the entire image; in the shadows, a mouse creeps before a set of basement window bars without stirring the adversary. In the present engraving executed by Francois Vivares, the background has been mostly removed and with it the context of tension and danger. It is a finely executed print preserved in very good overall condition, framed with a teal border in an ebonized frame behind glass.
Measurements: 11 1/2" H x 14 3/8" W [frame]
Condition Report:
Very minor discolorations and smudging to the paper, overall in very good condition. Frame is contemporary and has minor wear.
