"THE SIBYLLINE PROPHETESS" BRONZE SCULPTURE AFTER DUCHOISELLE
Circa mid-to-late 19th century, signed "Duchoiselle" along edge of base
Item # 903HSU24K
A beautifully cast model by 19th century sculptor Duchoiselle, it is a moving subject that depicts a Babylonian Sibyl passing ancient knowledge on to her Greco-Roman sister in the future. It is an admirable and inspired the handling of a subject matter that is difficult to portray, where the Classical generation rests on the shoulder of the past, her eyes raised to the horizon to receive this inspiration. The attention to detail is notable, though typical of Duchoiselle; chiseling of the faces, finishing of the skin, the incised detailing of the garments of both figures and the perfectly smooth chasing of the surface is excellent throughout. It is finished in an original brown and black chemical patina.
Measurements: 10 1/2" H x 10 3/4" W x 5 1/2" D
Wear to relief (fingers, tip of nose or crown, edges of garment, etc.) and discoloration to the original patina; surface cleaned, waxed and polished, in fine presentation-ready condition.
