About us

silla was born out of a passion for beautiful objects: special pieces with aesthetic and historical significance. In 2009, after years of collecting, Andrew Silla and his wife Grace began to work privately with clients from their residence in Southern Maryland. Quickly outgrowing the space, the business was moved from Maryland to Pennsylvania in 2012 and after several warehouse location changes it was firmly settled in the present brick-and-mortar location in downtown Shippensburg.

The 9000 square foot brick-and-mortar gallery is home to a large collection of works of art and estate jewelry. We specialize in sculpture circa 1860 through 1930 with a particular emphasis on the Animaliers and as such the gallery always has a very large collection of exceptional European and American sculpture available on display.

With "American Independence" leather faux-bookends

Probably Pennsylvania or New Jersey, late 18th century

82" H x 22" D x 42" W

A finely crafted two-part cherry secretary desk and bookcase retaining a mellow old surface and patina. The upper case features a projecting molded cornice with carved blind fretwork above paneled cupboard doors opening to a fitted interior with divided compartments and a candle slide below.

The slant front desk opens to an elaborate fitted interior with small drawers, pigeonholes, shaped valances and concealed document compartments disguised as leather bound volumes titled "American Independence." The lower case features an unusual arrangement of seven drawers retaining later, period appropriate batwing brasses and rests on ogee bracket feet.

Additional Measurements: Knee clearance 30 7/8". Writing surface when open 38" W x 26 1/8" D.

Provenance: Michelle Linet Antiques, New Hope, Pennsylvania, purchased June 29, 1995, for $15,500. The original bill of sale accompanies the secretary and records its reported descent through a family in Far Hills, New Jersey.

Condition: Mellow old surface and patina with minor repairs and age related wear throughout. Later appropriate brasses. Right upper door with some warping and repair. Small repairs to the original feet. Scattered cracks, shrinkage, surface wear and imperfections, including cracks to the slant front lid. Presents well.
