About us

silla was born out of a passion for beautiful objects: special pieces with aesthetic and historical significance. In 2009, after years of collecting, Andrew Silla and his wife Grace began to work privately with clients from their residence in Southern Maryland. Quickly outgrowing the space, the business was moved from Maryland to Pennsylvania in 2012 and after several warehouse location changes it was firmly settled in the present brick-and-mortar location in downtown Shippensburg.

The 9000 square foot brick-and-mortar gallery is home to a large collection of works of art and estate jewelry. We specialize in sculpture circa 1860 through 1930 with a particular emphasis on the Animaliers and as such the gallery always has a very large collection of exceptional European and American sculpture available on display.

ART DECO MACASSAR EBONY MARBLE-TOP SIDEBOARD
France, circa 1930s
Item # 111YGZ03A

A brilliant strikepoint piece, this Art Deco period sideboard dressed in high-polish lacquered macassar ebony veneers and topped with a large slab of Italian Nero Portoro marble. The cabinet is characterized by three doors that are operated by two nickel-plated matched keys, these opening to reveal two shelves on the right, the middle with a single hand-dovetailed drawer with a nickel-plated pull over a single shelf and the left side with a single shelf. The serpentine superstructure conforms to the curvature of the marble, this set into shallow recesses in the sides of the top. The back of the cabinet reveals tidy joinery with dovetailed lower corners.

Of very fine workmanship and material throughout, it is a remarkable piece that remains preserved in overall original condition.

Measurements: 37 1/8" H x 22 1/2" D x 78" W

Condition Report:
Good overall condition, surface in as-found well-preserved condition with several lacquer flaws including: "dent" along front right edge of top before the marble, some blemish along edges, joint line with lacquer flaw below hinge edge of outer doors, some light chipping to very bottom edges of upper cabinet, lacquer flaw at back left corner of the top, some lacquer loss to the feet (more notably on the left side), bottom front-corner on the right side of the chest with a lacquer chip. Overall presents well. Two original keys, each with worn nickel-plating; escutcheons with worn nickel-plating. Scuffs and scratches to the original marble top. Marble top shimmed beneath to add some support.
