BIEDERMEIER FIGURED MAPLE ROLL-TOP DESK
Austrian, circa 1830-50
Item # 007HQP30L
With rich and vibrant figured-maple veneers throughout, this fine Biedermeier writing desk features a rolling top that opens to reveal a series of six broader drawers flanking a pair of thinner drawers on either side around a single prospect door. The top drawer of the desk pulls out as the writing surface with a green-baize central writing pad with braces that drop down to allow it to act as an easel, this flanked on either side by slide-top compartments. Beneath this are two very deep drawers with striking architecture. The whole rests over ebonized square feet.
As is usually the case with Biedermeier furnishings, this imaginative desk shows a creative flair and a preference for leveraging architecture and natural material to create a statement over applied embellishments. It was built to last the test of time and functions beautifully as an active and enjoyable writing desk.
Measurements: 43 1/2" H x 21 7/8" D x 42" W [overall]; 36 3/4" H [from ground to writing surface] x 29 3/4" W [writing area]
Condition Report:
Top drawer with crush to veneer on right side; top backboard removed (probably due to shrinkage causing rubbing on roll-top). Veneer chipping to bottom edges of the sides. Some veneer patches here and there throughout. Replaced green baize writing surface. Minor seam openings to veneer joints; other minor surface blemishes and flaws. Feet likely replaced. A fine presentation piece that remains sturdy and strong for everyday use.
