About us

silla was born out of a passion for beautiful objects: special pieces with aesthetic and historical significance. In 2009, after years of collecting, Andrew Silla and his wife Grace began to work privately with clients from their residence in Southern Maryland. Quickly outgrowing the space, the business was moved from Maryland to Pennsylvania in 2012 and after several warehouse location changes it was firmly settled in the present brick-and-mortar location in downtown Shippensburg.

The 9000 square foot brick-and-mortar gallery is home to a large collection of works of art and estate jewelry. We specialize in sculpture circa 1860 through 1930 with a particular emphasis on the Animaliers and as such the gallery always has a very large collection of exceptional European and American sculpture available on display.

A BRONZE PORTRAIT BUST OF RICHARD WAGNER

Eugen Börmel
German, 1858–1932

7 5/8" H x 2 5/8" D x 2 5/8" W

A finely modeled bronze portrait bust of the German composer Richard Wagner (1813–1883), depicted wearing his characteristic velvet beret, high collared coat and necktie. Cast with a rich brown patina and raised on an integral socle over a square plinth. Signed and dated crisply on the reverse of the socle "E Börmel Berlin 1897."

Eugen Börmel, also known as Eugen Boermel, was a German sculptor born in Königsberg in 1858. He studied at the Berlin Academy of Arts under Fritz Schaper and Reinhold Begas before working for ten years in the atelier of Otto Lessing. Establishing his own studio in Berlin in 1889, Börmel produced portrait busts, decorative sculpture and numerous public monuments, including works for Berlin's Siegesallee and a monumental equestrian statue of Kaiser Wilhelm I in Danzig.

Condition: Good condition with minor rubbing and abrasions to the patina and traces of verdigris within the collar. Ready to place.
