About us

silla was born out of a passion for beautiful objects: special pieces with aesthetic and historical significance. In 2009, after years of collecting, Andrew Silla and his wife Grace began to work privately with clients from their residence in Southern Maryland. Quickly outgrowing the space, the business was moved from Maryland to Pennsylvania in 2012 and after several warehouse location changes it was firmly settled in the present brick-and-mortar location in downtown Shippensburg.

The 9000 square foot brick-and-mortar gallery is home to a large collection of works of art and estate jewelry. We specialize in sculpture circa 1860 through 1930 with a particular emphasis on the Animaliers and as such the gallery always has a very large collection of exceptional European and American sculpture available on display.

AMERICAN CHIPPENDALE WALNUT DOVETAILED BLANKET CHEST
Mid-Atlantic States, circa 1780

26 1/4" H x 23 3/4" D x 48 1/2" W

Walnut, iron, tulip poplar

A good late 18th century blanket chest over two drawers from the Mid-Atlantic States, probably Pennsylvania, it features a two-plank top surrounded by an applied molded edge projecting over a tidy face with a huge single plank of walnut arranged horizontally to showcase its dramatic grain profile. The open dovetails follow the upper corners through to the feet. Raised on bracket feet with shaped returns. Retaining apparently original bail pulls on the lower drawers. The top opens to a thin lidded till on the left side and the open blanket-chest on the remainder.

Condition: Replaced lid lock and clasp - note the scarring above the current keyhole along with the patch to the former keyhole; underside of the lid with scarring where original clasp was affixed. Left iron strap hinge missing a few screws. All-over refinished with a silky shellac surface, a good presentation with minor surface history/blemish as well as some stains to the top. Proper right back foot facing replaced. Lower locks appear to be original, untested with no keys. Ready to place.
