About us

silla was born out of a passion for beautiful objects: special pieces with aesthetic and historical significance. In 2009, after years of collecting, Andrew Silla and his wife Grace began to work privately with clients from their residence in Southern Maryland. Quickly outgrowing the space, the business was moved from Maryland to Pennsylvania in 2012 and after several warehouse location changes it was firmly settled in the present brick-and-mortar location in downtown Shippensburg.

The 9000 square foot brick-and-mortar gallery is home to a large collection of works of art and estate jewelry. We specialize in sculpture circa 1860 through 1930 with a particular emphasis on the Animaliers and as such the gallery always has a very large collection of exceptional European and American sculpture available on display.

Continental School (Late 18th Century) Fine Antique Oil Painting on Canvas
A Greco-Roman Classical Wedding Celebration
Item # 130205CHP17

This is a gorgeous antique 18th Century oil painting on canvas of Greco-Roman influence, though well after the time, this work probably executed during the last quarter of the 18th Century. A precious glimpse into a Wedding Celebration, this fine antique work of art has an almost lyrical quality to it, an incredibly busy and complex scene that harmoniously is brought together under brilliant hues of towering architecture. A bridegroom leads his bride before the onlooking guests, both clearly focused on the other while each member of the crowd seems to have a varying point of focus: an elderly blind man, led by his steward appears to be blessing the couple, much of the crowd looking to heaven in reverence. The detailed background reveals a large landscape overlooking the countryside and architecture of the cities before a backdrop of towering mountains under a bright blue sky.

The back of the canvas reveals the lining over the original canvas, both preserved on original stretchers that dovetail at the cross-stretcher.âÃâ  This is a very fine antique painting that has been extensively and expensively restored with great care and precision, resulting in a piece that will last the test of time and will hopefully be preserved for future generations to enjoy. Unsigned and unattributed, the quality of the work speaks for itself.

Measurements: [framed] 30" x 23" [stretcher/canvas] 18 3/8" x 24 5/8"

Condition Report:
Professionally restored at some point to result in a well preserved scene: relined, inpainted appropriately, stretchers backed by artist board to protect from the back. Under blacklight: large section of inpainting in upper-right-corner, small areas of inpainting on bride's robes, scattered inpainting in lower right corner. Frame is not original and with much cracks/gesso loss/chipping: most notably the corners.
