FRENCH EMPIRE MAHOGANY AND ORMOLU ARMOIRE
France, circa 1820–1840
85" H x 21 1/2" D x 47" W
Of architectural form, the projecting cornice above a single mirrored door framed by engaged, turned columns capped with gilt-bronze capitals and surmounted by anthemion and lyre-form mounts. The frieze centered with an elaborate gilt-bronze appliqué of musical and theatrical instruments within a foliate surround. Door opens to reveal a plain armoire interior over two drawers, raised on compressed bun feet. Mahogany veneers display well-figured grain, with gilt-bronze elements retaining traces of original fire gilding.
Condition: Refinished in the 20th century; surface with dulling and scattered blemishes. Mirror plate with areas of silvering loss. Minor scuffs and small veneer losses, more evident around keyholes. Key non-functional. Interior brass hanging bars are later additions and can be removed upon request. Lower drawer escutcheon mount absent, with small holes visible around keyhole. Drawer blade below lowest drawer replaced, with oak facing. Structurally sound and ready for placement.
