A FINE PAIR OF EMPIRE STYLE ORMOLU-MOUNTED MAHOGANY CHEST AND ARMOIRE
Circa first half of the 20th century, each with a "Wellington" locking mechanism
Item # 206FDP29A
A very high quality pair of Empire tall chests, they feature brilliant flamed-mahogany veneers with a wonderful overall french polish and are hung with gilded bronze mounts true to the period. Each is fitted with a black marble top over a cove molded crest. One chest features a set of equal drawers with hand-dovetailed construction both of the drawer and the double-hung interior box. This allows the drawer to be fully withdrawn from the chest without "pulling out" - all drawers operate with a very smooth action. The other chest features a door fitted to match the other chest with faux-drawers, this full length door opening to reveal an adjustable shelved interior. Both chests are fitted with "Wellington" locking mechanisms; the chest with drawers requires two keys, the columns flanking the doors flipping open to allow the drawers to be opened while the chest with the shelves has a lock in the right column that allows the door to open. Both chests are raised over ebonized animal paws.
