About us

silla was born out of a passion for beautiful objects: special pieces with aesthetic and historical significance. In 2009, after years of collecting, Andrew Silla and his wife Grace began to work privately with clients from their residence in Southern Maryland. Quickly outgrowing the space, the business was moved from Maryland to Pennsylvania in 2012 and after several warehouse location changes it was firmly settled in the present brick-and-mortar location in downtown Shippensburg.

The 9000 square foot brick-and-mortar gallery is home to a large collection of works of art and estate jewelry. We specialize in sculpture circa 1860 through 1930 with a particular emphasis on the Animaliers and as such the gallery always has a very large collection of exceptional European and American sculpture available on display.

FRENCH LOUIS XV STYLE CARVED GILTWOOD WINDOW BENCH
France, circa late 19th to early 20th century
Item # 306IVB14L

A very attractive, exquisitely carved and incredibly useful "window bench" in the Louis XV taste, this form is often found at the foot of the bed, as a seating piece in the entryway or in hallways with a relatively narrow depth of 17 1/4" or of course as the name suggests, beneath a large window overlooking a beautiful view. The double-back design not only makes for comfortable and flexible seating, but also lends some visual mass to a space for some needed texture while presenting with airy and delicate lines that do not overwhelm in any way.

The carvings are so beautifully executed throughout. Crisp medallions in the bench backs feature a flowing bas-relief fleur-de-lis that is flanked on either corner by opposing C-scrolls with flowing vines of foliage curving along the molded frame. An incredibly crisp rocaille focal point is centered on the apron of either side, this with brilliantly developed acanthus foliage flowing outward in a chaotic pattern along the undulating curves of the frame. And the bench rests over the typical cyma-curved legs, each with deep and fully realized carvings of acanthus that extend nearly the entire length of the leg from the crisp carved inset shells of the knee through the scrolled toes of the foot.

It is upholstered in an attractive vintage pink damask, not original but also not new, overall this remaining in rather excellent condition with only minor use indicators.

A wonderful selection - a statement piece - and just an all-around useful and comfortable bench!

Measurements: 40 1/8" H x 18 3/8" H to seat x 53 3/8" W x 17 1/4" D

Condition Report:
Vintage upholstery in overall "good" condition, very minor use indicators and minor blemishes. Gilding with wear and oxidization throughout, a nice overall patina, some light chipping that exposes the underlying gesso. Several relief carvings on the "backs" (facing the sitter) are chipped away. Sturdy joints, comfortable and strong.
