About us

silla was born out of a passion for beautiful objects: special pieces with aesthetic and historical significance. In 2009, after years of collecting, Andrew Silla and his wife Grace began to work privately with clients from their residence in Southern Maryland. Quickly outgrowing the space, the business was moved from Maryland to Pennsylvania in 2012 and after several warehouse location changes it was firmly settled in the present brick-and-mortar location in downtown Shippensburg.

The 9000 square foot brick-and-mortar gallery is home to a large collection of works of art and estate jewelry. We specialize in sculpture circa 1860 through 1930 with a particular emphasis on the Animaliers and as such the gallery always has a very large collection of exceptional European and American sculpture available on display.

A BRONZE HEAD OF A SATYR

Attributed to Vincenzo Gemito (Italian, 1852-1929)

Lost-wax cast and patinated bronze raised on two solid blocks of marble, cast circa 1910

13" H x 7 3/8" D x approximately 14" W
9" H (bronze sculpture)

A finely modeled lost wax bronze head of a satyr, bearing the signature "Gemito" cast into the bronze. The figure is depicted with a broad, animated smile, pointed ears and small horns, his head crowned with grape leaves and clusters of fruit. The surface retains a warm brown patina with golden undertones, the deeply worked features and textured hair contrasting with the smoother modeling of the face.

The work is generally understood as being the work of the Neapolitan sculptor Vincenzo Gemito (1852–1929), although the model's authorship and original date of conception have not been conclusively established. Examples of the composition are recorded in various sizes and finishes, including a bronze in the Alberghini Collection at the Pinacoteca Civica Graziano Campanini in Pieve di Cento, Italy.

Condition: Very good overall condition with no observed flaws to the bronze. The marble displays scattered roughness, minor chips and surface wear. A modern nut secures the mounting post beneath the marble base. Fine presentation.
