About us

silla was born out of a passion for beautiful objects: special pieces with aesthetic and historical significance. In 2009, after years of collecting, Andrew Silla and his wife Grace began to work privately with clients from their residence in Southern Maryland. Quickly outgrowing the space, the business was moved from Maryland to Pennsylvania in 2012 and after several warehouse location changes it was firmly settled in the present brick-and-mortar location in downtown Shippensburg.

The 9000 square foot brick-and-mortar gallery is home to a large collection of works of art and estate jewelry. We specialize in sculpture circa 1860 through 1930 with a particular emphasis on the Animaliers and as such the gallery always has a very large collection of exceptional European and American sculpture available on display.

SET OF FOUR ITALIAN MODERNIST BRUSHED STEEL AND BRASS DINING CHAIRS

Manner of Maison Jansen
Italy, circa 1960s
Marked to underside of sabots "MADE IN ITALY"

32 1/4" H x 19" D x 18" W x 19" H to seat

A striking set of four chairs entirely crafted out of brushed steel with solid brass accent points, they are generally attributed to Maison Jansen but no documentation exists to that end. Beautifully made in the Neoclassical taste, there is much borrowing from antiquity in the chairs with Savonarola front legs and a curved back borrowed from the Regency era. Solid brass straps lock stretch the back in a form that echoes the front legs in opposing C-scrolls. The elements are locked together with solid brass bolts and internally threaded screws that look like rivets. The chairs rest over solid brass cast goat hoof sabots.

We also may still have in stock two glass tables of the same era that make a brilliant match with the chairs.

Condition:
Surface left raw with the natural patina of time and gentle wear. Retains the original white vinyl coverings, lightly discolored though certainly still serviceable or easily changed. Two internal screws perfectly refabricated as matches for missing screws. The chairs can be completely re-polished upon request.
