About us

silla was born out of a passion for beautiful objects: special pieces with aesthetic and historical significance. In 2009, after years of collecting, Andrew Silla and his wife Grace began to work privately with clients from their residence in Southern Maryland. Quickly outgrowing the space, the business was moved from Maryland to Pennsylvania in 2012 and after several warehouse location changes it was firmly settled in the present brick-and-mortar location in downtown Shippensburg.

The 9000 square foot brick-and-mortar gallery is home to a large collection of works of art and estate jewelry. We specialize in sculpture circa 1860 through 1930 with a particular emphasis on the Animaliers and as such the gallery always has a very large collection of exceptional European and American sculpture available on display.

Pastoral Landscape with Cows

Oil on artist panel | Signed lower right "A. Curtin Davis"

Item # 103VNK23L

A very fine and brilliantly impressionistic pastoral landscape view of two cows grazing in the countryside, the work is executed on an artist panel with tracing of an interior scene study verso. The work was executed by the Pennsylvania and Maryland artist Andrew Cutin Davis and is housed in a hand-carved giltwood frame of fine quality. Signed lower right, it remains in pristine original condition.

ARTIST
Andrew Curtin Davis was born in New Paris, Pennsylvania, on Oct. 12, 1853 to John Wesley Davis and Sarah “Catherine” Snook. He was a well- and widely-known artist and painter. He sketched comic pictures for comic magazines while also focusing on painting genre scenes and landscapes. He traveled and painted scenes in England, France, Egypt and the Holy Land in addition to his local studies. Furthermore, he carved and gilded many of his own frames and exhibited many of his paintings in these. He died Mar. 5, 1915 in Cumberland, MD and was buried in the Bedford Cemetery.
