LOUIS XVI CARVED AND SCRUBBED PARCEL-GILT CANAPÉ

A lovely Louis XVI period canapé from the last quarter of the 18th century, the sofa features a worn aesthetic in the scrubbed frame with only trace remnants of the polychroming, gilding and gesso remaining in crevices and low points throughout. The wood has taken on a lovely patina of its own, having an overall slightly reddish hue and being full of character throughout the historical surface. The frame over the seat back is simple with a smooth profile highlighted by a single channel culminating in a large fleur-de-lis bas-relief carving in the crest. The arms wrap around the sitter in the typical manner with curved handholds over cabriole arm supports. The down-stuffed cushion is incredibly deep and comfortabale, the modern fabric remaining vibrant and a lovely contrast to the simple pearl tone of the back and seat-rail. The apron is embellished with a repeated fluting and rosettes over each leg, these being tapered and fluted to match the apron. A lovely piece, comfortable and enjoyable, ready to place.

Condition Report: Relatively new upholstery with only minor flaws/discolorations (note some glue visibility along the piping of the back); heavily worn surface with only remnants of gilt, gesso and polychroming visible; legs with various old repairs and joint rebuilding; patch to handholds; old tacking holes from prior upholstery throughout; not examined without upholstery; sturdy and stable throughout, the nature of the design results in the legs having some wiggle if sideways pressure is applied but remains strong and enjoyable without concern; back middle leg with a pad applied to the underside - it probably was to account for a low point in the floor, as it makes the leg ever-so-slightly proud (we added felt pads to the other feet to account for it and you will adjust accordingly depending on your floor); a very fine presentation, ready to place.
