About us

silla was born out of a passion for beautiful objects: special pieces with aesthetic and historical significance. In 2009, after years of collecting, Andrew Silla and his wife Grace began to work privately with clients from their residence in Southern Maryland. Quickly outgrowing the space, the business was moved from Maryland to Pennsylvania in 2012 and after several warehouse location changes it was firmly settled in the present brick-and-mortar location in downtown Shippensburg.

The 9000 square foot brick-and-mortar gallery is home to a large collection of works of art and estate jewelry. We specialize in sculpture circa 1860 through 1930 with a particular emphasis on the Animaliers and as such the gallery always has a very large collection of exceptional European and American sculpture available on display.

A PAIR OF ART DECO REVIVAL ETCHED GLASS DOORS

Dennis Abbe
American, 1941–1995

Glass, copper, brass
Doors likely circa 1970–1985

83 1/8" H x 60" W overall (approximately)

A large pair of heavy clear glass doors with deeply etched and frosted decoration depicting an elaborate floral arrangement rising from a classical urn. The composition extends across both panels, incorporating scrolling foliage, flowers and geometric borders. Fitted with original copper trim and brass plated hinge hardware, with fixed cast brass handles on either side. Signed "ABBE" in the lower corner.

Dennis Abbe was an American glass artist and interior designer whose work was closely associated with the revival of Art Deco during the 1970s and 1980s. Having studied at the Art Institute of Chicago and the Art Center School in Los Angeles, Abbe developed a specialization in decorative glass engraving, producing architectural panels, doors and screens for residential and commercial interiors. He was a founder and the first president of the Art Deco Society of New York.

Condition: Good overall condition with discoloration and tarnishing to the copper trim and wear to the brass plated hinge hardware. Fixed cast brass handles are present on both sides; their originality has not been established.
