PAIR OF SCANDINAVIAN MODERN "SAFARI" CHAIRS ATTRIBUTED TO WILHELM KIENZLE
Ebonized beechwood, brand new artisan-made black saddle leather | circa 1970s
ref. 405QXS07W
32 1/2" H x 24" D x 24" W x 14 1/4" H to seat
This exquisite pair of chairs are crafted in the "Safari" style. They exemplify Scandinavian design principles with a perfect balance of functionality and clean austere aesthetics. Designed to be fully disassembled for easy transport, the chair is generally attributed to Wilhelm Kienzle (though we have not found original catalogs for evidence to support the market's attribution). The chair is constructed from solid beechwood that has been ebonized to a near black. The four posts support the strap-leather arms before transitioning from squared sections to tapered legs.
The chair's leatherwork is beautifully executed by a local artisan, updating what was formerly worn canvas upholstery. It is a very heavy saddle leather that will last an incredibly long time if well-cared for.
** NOTE, unless otherwise requested and quoted, the chairs will ship entirely disassembled to keep shipping costs down for our clients. This means some reassembly of the chairs is required upon receipt. **
We have a large collection of vintage "Safari" chairs from the 1950s through 1970s - browse our gallery stock to view other great examples.
Condition Report: Wear and abrading to the ebonized surface of the frame throughout - we can certainly touch up the losses upon request, but have left the frames largely as-found. All new leather upholstery. Replaced carriage bolts in the shoulders. Ready to place.
