PAIR OF BRONZE KOI SCULPTURES
Probably American, circa 1960s
23 3/8" H x 14" D x 21" W
A pair of large bronze koi sculptures, each modeled with mouths agape and tails curled beneath, the surfaces textured with incised scales and broad fins. Cast in hollow form, the interiors remain open and unfinished to allow for use as vases or jardinieres. They also could be easily fitted as fountains with minimal invasion. The proportions and placement of the fins and tail are very clever, allowing each to be perfectly stable without actually having a "base" - and they can be presented either with mouths pointing upwards as shown or a more naturalistic horizontal position resting on the downward pointing fins.
Each is finished in a lovely original verdigris patination.
Condition: Excellent condition with minor oxidation and surface irregularities consistent with age and outdoor exposure. Scuffs and wear. Left entirely natural without any polishing or waxing.
