About us

silla was born out of a passion for beautiful objects: special pieces with aesthetic and historical significance. In 2009, after years of collecting, Andrew Silla and his wife Grace began to work privately with clients from their residence in Southern Maryland. Quickly outgrowing the space, the business was moved from Maryland to Pennsylvania in 2012 and after several warehouse location changes it was firmly settled in the present brick-and-mortar location in downtown Shippensburg.

The 9000 square foot brick-and-mortar gallery is home to a large collection of works of art and estate jewelry. We specialize in sculpture circa 1860 through 1930 with a particular emphasis on the Animaliers and as such the gallery always has a very large collection of exceptional European and American sculpture available on display.

FRANZ VAN SEVERDONCK
Belgian, 1809-1889

Poultry in a Landscape (1860)

Oil on panel | Signed lower left "1860 F. Severdonck" | inscribed and signed by artist to reverse of panel

Item # 106LYP27M

A very finely painted landscape scene with a proud rooster as the focal point, surrounded by hens and chicks with two ducks swimming in the nearby pond beneath a vivid blue sky. The work is executed on an oil panel and is signed lower left, dated 1860, while the reverse of the panel is inscribed in French and signed. It appears to be hung in the original frame, a very nice giltwood composition frame with a fluted cove and acanthus relief corners before a pressed bas-relief anthemion border.

Measurements: 7" H x 9/3" W [panel]; 15 3/8" H x 18" W x 2 3/4" D [frame]

Condition Report:
Cleaned and professionally conserved (treatments include removal of old varnish layer, touching up scratch in the clouds, applying fresh Damar varnish); minor crazing to the paint; frame with wear and some losses, chipping to the gilding in a few spots; presents beautifully.
