About us

silla was born out of a passion for beautiful objects: special pieces with aesthetic and historical significance. In 2009, after years of collecting, Andrew Silla and his wife Grace began to work privately with clients from their residence in Southern Maryland. Quickly outgrowing the space, the business was moved from Maryland to Pennsylvania in 2012 and after several warehouse location changes it was firmly settled in the present brick-and-mortar location in downtown Shippensburg.

The 9000 square foot brick-and-mortar gallery is home to a large collection of works of art and estate jewelry. We specialize in sculpture circa 1860 through 1930 with a particular emphasis on the Animaliers and as such the gallery always has a very large collection of exceptional European and American sculpture available on display.

POULTRY IN THE BARNYARD
CLAUDE GUILLEMINET (FRENCH, B. 1821)
Oil on canvas | Signed "(C & G intertwined)uilleminet" lower right corner
Item # 102KUB04L

A wonderful rural scene by animal specialist Claude Guilleminet, the scene features a busy barnyard with hens, roosters, ducks and turkeys crowding around water and feed basins and searching throughout the scattered hay for bugs while a pigeon watches from her roost above. The scene is painted with vivid color and wonderful use of light and shadows that is most effective in bringing the fervor of activity to life. It is hung in a very nice period carved gildtwood frame.

For a slightly smaller example, though similar in composition, see Christies, New York, 2 April 2002, Sale 1033, lot 146, "A Rooster, Chickens and Baby Chicks in an Interior", 15 3/4" x 12 3/4", achieved $ 3760 USD.

Condition Report:
Appears to have been restored perhaps circa 1990 and again restored by our conservator 2021. Linen with sturdy wax lining on what appears to be cotton duck. Stretcher bars are old, but likely not original. One area of overpaint approximately 2" in length in center upper right quadrant. Another 1" diameter inpaint in lower left corner covering a filling. Line of filling and inpaint to right side where painting would have met tacking edge. Under UV the later varnishes somewhat obscure surface examination; scattered specks of touch up throughout, including to the right two birds and in a few spots along the edges. Very fine overall condition, presents beautifully, ready to place.
