About us

silla was born out of a passion for beautiful objects: special pieces with aesthetic and historical significance. In 2009, after years of collecting, Andrew Silla and his wife Grace began to work privately with clients from their residence in Southern Maryland. Quickly outgrowing the space, the business was moved from Maryland to Pennsylvania in 2012 and after several warehouse location changes it was firmly settled in the present brick-and-mortar location in downtown Shippensburg.

The 9000 square foot brick-and-mortar gallery is home to a large collection of works of art and estate jewelry. We specialize in sculpture circa 1860 through 1930 with a particular emphasis on the Animaliers and as such the gallery always has a very large collection of exceptional European and American sculpture available on display.

LOUIS XV CHERRYWOOD WRITING TABLE
Southern France, circa mid-18th century

28" H x 24 3/4" D x 33" W

A table that looks like it is ready to dance out of the room, this fabulous table from the reign of Louis XV features the loose adherence to the form while retaining a lively naivete in the overall form. The body of the table is defined by its undulating cupid's bow curvature, a shape matched in the conforming top. This is a particularly complex achievement, in that the drawer is subtly bombay vertically while having the oxbow form horizontally and at the same time the apron beneath the drawer boasts a subtle outward projection. The legs are halfway between cabriole and klismo, almost indecisive and in motion, the dramatized high knee curving sharply inward while simultaneously tapering before the ankle moves back out in a tight scrolling toe.

The dense cherrywood has developed a lovely overall patina, this silky to the touch and issuing an ever-so-gentle red hue in the mellowed boards.

Condition: Two feet are early spliced replacements; separation between the two boards of the top; old inactive pest damage in several areas throughout; no key, locks untested; minor scuffs and abrasions to the early finish; sturdy and stable, ready to place.
