CHARLES ADELIN MOREL DE TANGUY
French, 1857-1930
Sailing at Sunset
Oil on Panel | housed in an almost certainly original giltwood frame
Signed lower right in script "Morel de Tanguy"
11 5/8" H x 15 1/8" W x 1 1/16" D [frame]
9 1/4" H x 13" W [panel]
One of the most pleasant seascapes we've encountered of late, this small painting is so easily placed and is the very essence of perfect color balance. Executed entirely in oil on artist's panel, the scene has a distinctly pastel quality in the seamless way Morel de Tanguy moves from one hue into the next without any point of delineation. The sky moves in that same dreamlike quality we find so expressive along the shore, the denser humid air allowing sharp color shifts along the tight horizon as the sky eventually fades into a teal and blue. Three sailing vessels ride along the water, the calm seas almost devoid of motion as light catches their sails and sets each afire in reflected light. The work is signed lower right. Exquisite.
Condition: Trace surface grime in the lower recesses of the oil. A very fine presentation that does not require conservation. Giltwood frame is probably original to the painting and has had the surface refreshed over the years. Very minimal touch up visible under UV light. Ready to place.
