About us

silla was born out of a passion for beautiful objects: special pieces with aesthetic and historical significance. In 2009, after years of collecting, Andrew Silla and his wife Grace began to work privately with clients from their residence in Southern Maryland. Quickly outgrowing the space, the business was moved from Maryland to Pennsylvania in 2012 and after several warehouse location changes it was firmly settled in the present brick-and-mortar location in downtown Shippensburg.

The 9000 square foot brick-and-mortar gallery is home to a large collection of works of art and estate jewelry. We specialize in sculpture circa 1860 through 1930 with a particular emphasis on the Animaliers and as such the gallery always has a very large collection of exceptional European and American sculpture available on display.

SEVERIN HANSEN FOR HASLEV MØBELSNEDKERI TEAK MODEL 36 WRITING DESK
Denmark, circa 1960s | with original label and Danish Control seal to underside
Item # 112IOP08Z

A sleek and streamlined writing piece, the Model 36 desk by Severin Hansen was exhibited at the Cabinetmarker's Guild Exhibition in Copenhagen in 1958, the same year it was designed by Hansen. It was an immediate success and has become an iconic piece of the Danish Modern period, one of Hansen's most highly sought-after designs. The present example has been preserved in as nearly untouched condition as is practical, the surface carefully cleaned and re-oiled without disturbing the underlying patina. The rich teak veneers are unusually thick and have a wonderful open grain. It was executed by Haslev Møbelsnedkeri and retains the original label from their manufacture on the underside depicting a deer flanked by two tree stumps in an open field - true to most of their production, the quality of the desk is above reproach with tight and nearly seamless joints and tidy construction.

Measurements: 27 7/8" H x 29 5/8" D x 56 1/4" W

Condition Report:
Surface very lightly re-oiled; original worn and discolored patina retained throughout; we have left the desk as nearly untouched as possible: crescent scar to top, other oxidized scratches/use indicators to the top, fading and surface variation; veneer loss above right drawer and to bottom of right foot, smaller veneer loss along lower edge of the back (on right side when looking at the back), other minor veneer losses/blemishes. Sturdy, strong and a very striking presentation. No keys.
