About us

silla was born out of a passion for beautiful objects: special pieces with aesthetic and historical significance. In 2009, after years of collecting, Andrew Silla and his wife Grace began to work privately with clients from their residence in Southern Maryland. Quickly outgrowing the space, the business was moved from Maryland to Pennsylvania in 2012 and after several warehouse location changes it was firmly settled in the present brick-and-mortar location in downtown Shippensburg.

The 9000 square foot brick-and-mortar gallery is home to a large collection of works of art and estate jewelry. We specialize in sculpture circa 1860 through 1930 with a particular emphasis on the Animaliers and as such the gallery always has a very large collection of exceptional European and American sculpture available on display.

SWEDISH GUSTAVIAN STYLE MAHOGANY THREE DRAWER COMMODE
Probably Sweden, 20th century

Mahogany veneers over pine, marble top, gilt brass hardware

32 5/16" H x 19 5/8" D x 38 3/4" W

A Swedish Gustavian style commode with three long drawers, veneered in richly figured mahogany over a pine secondary structure. The case is raised on tapering legs with gilt brass sabots and fitted with a shaped marble top above a restrained architectural body. Brass mounts outline the drawer fronts and side pilasters, while the original ring pulls and escutcheons provide a refined contrast against the deep red brown mahogany surface.

The design reflects the Swedish interpretation of neoclassicism associated with the Gustavian period with clean rectilinear proportions, brass-inlaid fluted side uprights and brass cockbead moldings around the drawers framing simple circular ring pulls and keyhole escutcheons, tapered legs with triangular brass mounts raised in simple tapered cup sabots. The construction is benchmade in the traditional manner, with hand dovetailed drawers and pine secondary woods. The commode retains its original gilt brass hardware and marble top.

Condition: Vintage surface with a nice mellowed patina throughout, rubbing and use indicators, proper left side of case with a chip to the veneers in the upper back corner. Some rough spots and rubbing to marble. No keys. A very finely crafted 20th century reproduction, built to last, ready to place.
