About us

silla was born out of a passion for beautiful objects: special pieces with aesthetic and historical significance. In 2009, after years of collecting, Andrew Silla and his wife Grace began to work privately with clients from their residence in Southern Maryland. Quickly outgrowing the space, the business was moved from Maryland to Pennsylvania in 2012 and after several warehouse location changes it was firmly settled in the present brick-and-mortar location in downtown Shippensburg.

The 9000 square foot brick-and-mortar gallery is home to a large collection of works of art and estate jewelry. We specialize in sculpture circa 1860 through 1930 with a particular emphasis on the Animaliers and as such the gallery always has a very large collection of exceptional European and American sculpture available on display.

WILHELM VELTEN (RUSSIAN/GERMAN, 1847-1929) "THE HORSE FAIR
Signed lower right W Velten Münich, in oil on artist panel
Item # 809HOP20A

Typical of work by Velten, this small oil panel is tightly and precisely painted with such an exquisite level of detailing; it is a highly complex scene with nearly a dozen figures and nearly as many horses in the fore and mid-grounds.  His paintings were almost exclusively very small and this example is quite large for him, most of his scenes being even smaller.  The degree of effort and skill he showcases in these small spaces is noteworthy and a contributing factor to his high collectibility.  Born in St. Petersburg, Russia in 1847, Wilhelm Velten moved as a young man to Germany where he worked from until his death in Munich in 1929.  The majority of his work focuses around military scenes, vivid landscapes with horses and figures, hunting scenes and snowy landscapes.  His works are held in museum collections in Munich, Prague and Buffalo.
