About us

silla was born out of a passion for beautiful objects: special pieces with aesthetic and historical significance. In 2009, after years of collecting, Andrew Silla and his wife Grace began to work privately with clients from their residence in Southern Maryland. Quickly outgrowing the space, the business was moved from Maryland to Pennsylvania in 2012 and after several warehouse location changes it was firmly settled in the present brick-and-mortar location in downtown Shippensburg.

The 9000 square foot brick-and-mortar gallery is home to a large collection of works of art and estate jewelry. We specialize in sculpture circa 1860 through 1930 with a particular emphasis on the Animaliers and as such the gallery always has a very large collection of exceptional European and American sculpture available on display.

HENRI ALFRED JACQUEMART
French, 1824-1896

"The Hound and the Tortoise"

Patinated sand-cast bronze | Cast circa 1860 | Signed in base "A. JACQUEMART"

Item # 202PAD12Q

A very fine and difficult to find model of Jacquemart's Hound and the Tortoise, the present sand-cast example is circa 1860 with an original silky nuanced surface patina of dark browns rubbed through to auburn highlights. The texture in the surface is brilliant and is captured directly from the mold with no evidence of cold-tooling. This model is discussed in Christopher Payne's Animals in Bronze where it is illustrated on the back cover [also see p. 220, pl. 7 for a full color illustration and discussion of the model]. The same model is held in the permanent collection of Ireland's National Trust, Springhill [acc. no. 216279]. Signed in the base with his typical crisp signature "A. JACQUEMART", the underside features peened-post joinery with perhaps latter inscription of "100" to the edge.

Measurements: 5 3/4" H x 4 1/16" D x 6 3/4" W [base], 7" W [total]

Condition Report:Very good original condition; very minor handling wear and relieved patina; surface is sealed in conservator-grade wax and is a fine presentation.
