About us

silla was born out of a passion for beautiful objects: special pieces with aesthetic and historical significance. In 2009, after years of collecting, Andrew Silla and his wife Grace began to work privately with clients from their residence in Southern Maryland. Quickly outgrowing the space, the business was moved from Maryland to Pennsylvania in 2012 and after several warehouse location changes it was firmly settled in the present brick-and-mortar location in downtown Shippensburg.

The 9000 square foot brick-and-mortar gallery is home to a large collection of works of art and estate jewelry. We specialize in sculpture circa 1860 through 1930 with a particular emphasis on the Animaliers and as such the gallery always has a very large collection of exceptional European and American sculpture available on display.

A PAIR OF BRONZE FIGURES OF URANIE AND ERATO

After Émile Louis Picault
French, 1833–1915

25 3/4" H x 9 3/8" D x 9 3/8" W (each)

A finely sand-cast pair of bronze sculptures with warm brown patination, signed "Picault" on the scroll and raised on their original circular black marble socles, titled "URANIE" and "ERATO" with remnants of gilt lettering.

The figures represent Urania and Erato, two of the nine Muses of Greek mythology. Urania, the Muse of astronomy, is depicted holding a lighted lamp and a book inscribed "SCIENCIA" (knowledge or science), emphasizing her association with learning and the sciences. Erato, the Muse of lyric and love poetry, studies a delicate butterfly, an emblem traditionally associated with the soul, love and transformation. Both figures are rendered in classical drapery, their attributes reflecting Picault's treatment of allegorical subjects.

Condition: Rubbing and wear to the original patina throughout. Carefully cleaned and sealed with conservator's wax. Ready to place.
