CARVED WALNUT AND TOOLED-LEATHER BUREAU PLAT
Continental, probably French, ca. 1940
29 3/4" H x 31 3/8" D x 59 1/8" W; 23 3/8" H to underside
A late Art Deco writing desk with carved floral appliqués in the manner of Art Nouveau, ca. 1940, likely continental in origin. It features a gilt-tooled double Greek key edging around the leather top, the facade with a pair of short drawers on either side flanking a single broad drawer, each carved with stylized floral bouquets set in geometric patterns in the drawers and tied drapery edge motif. Raised over swollen baluster fluted legs.
Condition: Retains one working key. Discolorations and patination to the leather writing surface throughout, some edge lifting. Circular impression to right top drawer where the key likely had something hanging from it that rubbed for decades. Minor scuffs and scratches throughout, fading. Overall a very fine presentation and highly functional.
