About us

silla was born out of a passion for beautiful objects: special pieces with aesthetic and historical significance. In 2009, after years of collecting, Andrew Silla and his wife Grace began to work privately with clients from their residence in Southern Maryland. Quickly outgrowing the space, the business was moved from Maryland to Pennsylvania in 2012 and after several warehouse location changes it was firmly settled in the present brick-and-mortar location in downtown Shippensburg.

The 9000 square foot brick-and-mortar gallery is home to a large collection of works of art and estate jewelry. We specialize in sculpture circa 1860 through 1930 with a particular emphasis on the Animaliers and as such the gallery always has a very large collection of exceptional European and American sculpture available on display.

KIDNEY FORM BUREAU PLAT OR WRITING DESK
Probably Baltic, late 19th century

31 3/4" H x 20" D x 38" W
24" knee clearance

A finely proportioned kidney-form bureau plat, veneered in richly figured and beautifully patinated mahogany and conceived in a restrained Neoclassical taste. The shaped top is fitted with an inset green gilt-tooled leather writing surface and enclosed by a pierced brass gallery within curved mahogany uprights. The façade is organized with a central drawer flanked on either side by a pair of smaller drawers conforming to the curve of the kidney profile. The drawers are hand dovetailed in the typical manner with oversized crisp pins, each retaining its original intricate sand-cast ormolu ring hardware.

The case is articulated with delicate brass stringing and vertical fluting applied to the legs, these terminating in simple bronze sabots.

With a fabulous size for use in today's interior, not in any way overwhelming the space while still providing a large comfortable working space on the warm leather top, it is an easy desk to place. Furthermore, its curved form and fine finish on all angles allows it to be placed in the center of a space as easily as against the wall or in front of a large window.

Condition:
Overall a very nice presentation, warm patina and an overall historical surface with expected wear/blemishes/flaws, none noteworthy. Sturdy and stable. Minor veneer abrasions and losses. The brass gallery around the top lifts somewhat from shrinkage in the desk dimensions over time - not concerning or requiring address, but it could be addressed without great difficulty. Leather is old with scuffs/abrading and use indicators. Ready to place.
